I’m gonna be a mama

Right now I am 5 weeks pregnant! It still doesn’t really seem real to me, besides the nausea, tender breasts, frequent urination and fatigue reminding me every day. I’m sure when I go in to see my OB and I get to hear the heartbeat things will feel a lot more real.

Now, at first Cory and I weren’t trying to get pregnant. I wanted to wait until he was done with Dental School and settled in from moving back to Arizona, so I was thinking next July would be a good time. But then one day, it hit me. The baby bug planted itself in my brain and got nice and comfy. It all started when I was at Costco one day, I was walking down an isle with random home items when all of a sudden they had a nice little car seat with many cool features, so I found myself checking it out and having baby thoughts. I didn’t realize it until I finished reading the “features” tag and then I came back to my senses and walked away questioning why I was even looking at it. As I finished up at Costco I had to stop at Target, once again I found myself in the baby section looking at cute little mini clothes and shoes. Then again, I came to my senses and asked “what am I doing?!”. Immediately after that I went straight over to the health section and bought a big box of condoms.

Since then, I looked at babies in a completely different way. Before, I would see a baby and wouldn’t even think twice but now, little hearts formed in my eyes as I adored their little ways. A few months past by and (like I said, we weren’t trying) my period was late and I was feeling all the early pregnancy symptoms. The first symptom was nausea, I was in the bathroom one morning curling my hair when all of a sudden it hit me, I felt like I needed to throw up and I hadn’t had that feeling since I was a little kid! I was pretty much convinced that I was pregnant. Cory and I started to get more and more excited and I felt like I could be ready for this new adventure. But about 3 days after my missed period I woke up to some bleeding, still convinced that I was pregnant I thought it might just be spotting. But once I laid back down I got horrible cramps, they never went away and I called my sister and asked her about it. She said, it probably wasn’t spotting and that I wasn’t pregnant, after she said that I got really sad but tried to hide it. For the rest of the day I was in bed with the worst cramps I have ever had.

After that little glimpse of possible pregnancy, I felt ready to actually start trying for a baby! I had so many scared thoughts in my head like, what if I am infertile? I wonder how long it is going to take for me to get pregnant? What if I have a miscarriage? If I can’t get pregnant soon, I’m going to be an old mom, etc. etc. Then one morning I decided that I needed to stop worrying about it so much, so I said a prayer asking Heavenly Father to calm my thoughts and fears. Immediately after my prayer those thoughts had almost diminished, I barely even thought about it and I actually kind of convinced myself that it was going to take months to get pregnant and not to worry so much about it.

About 6 days before my period I decided to take a pregnancy test. I woke up at about 7:15 and I wanted to wait until Cory left for school at 7:50 so I could surprise him if I was. I tried to go back to bed but I couldn’t, I kept wondering if I was pregnant or not so I looked at the clock and it was 7:30. It felt like I was waiting in bed for at least 45 minutes and Cory was going to leave at any minute, so I couldn’t stand it anymore! I got up and took the test, I kept thinking “don’t get your hopes up, you’re not pregnant”, then I looked at the test and there was a very faint line. I needed a second opinion so I called Cory in, I already ruined the surprise but I just didn’t know! He looked at it and saw the line too. But we both weren’t convinced that I was pregnant (mainly because the test was bought from the dollar store) So Cory left for school and I started working, we waited until the next day to take another and the line was a little darker, it was another dollar store test so we still weren’t jumping up and down. On the third day I actually used a legit brand test and it was going positive within seconds! That was when Cory and I were pretty much positive that I was pregnant! That morning we were leaving for Arizona to see our new niece, Kaley who was born 5 weeks early on the 4th of July.

Once we arrived in Arizona it seemed that the topic of pregnancy and babies was being constantly talked about. Then Kyle and Caitlin (brother & sister in-law) brought little baby Kaley over and even more baby talk came up, people started asking when Cory and I were going to start trying for a baby and I am the worst liar ever, especially with such exciting news! So we kept our cool until the end of the night until I could barely hold it in anymore! So we decided to tell the family, I made a little impromptu way of telling Cory’s parents. At that point we read that the baby was the size of a poppy seed, so I found a little black sprinkle and taped it to the front of some yellow cardstock and made a little card. When they opened the card it said “Arriving April 2014” and put it in a little box tied with a bow. They were all very excited!

I have only told a handful of people and this blog is private for now until I’m around 13 weeks. I have yet to tell my parents, so I need to make a little package to send to them!

Cory and I are very excited for our new little growing baby! I had a dream that it was going to be a girl, so we will see if I am right. Cory wants it to be a boy of course, either way, I can’t wait to meet him/her!

Week: 5 weeks pregnant

Our baby is the size of an: Orange seed

Symptoms: Nausea (has actually gotten better these past two days), frequent urination,  slight fatigue, tender breasts and major bloating, I feel huge all the time and I’m not even showing yet! (not a good sign)

Food: So far no food aversions or cravings. I have been trying to eat very healthy and more often than usual. I am not a big eater, I actually hate having to eat. So I used to skip meals a lot (I know, not good) but now I make sure to eat 5 to 6 times a day otherwise I get nauseous. I have been trying to eat a lot of fruits and veggies.

Today, I had a spinach, egg white omelet with wholewheat raisin toast for breakfast, for lunch I made a chicken salad sandwich with a glass of milk, for a snack I had a sliced apple with peanut butter and for dinner I had a kale salad with corn, tomatoes and yummy deviled eggs from this great restaurant down the street called The Warehouse. Afterwards we walked over to get some frozen yogurt! I got coconut yogurt with strawberries and blueberries it was so yummy!

Exercise: I was planning on going to the gym today, but right around the time I was going to go I got so incredibly tired! I just had to lay down, so we walked to dinner and to get frozen yogurt which was about 3 miles round trip. It was nice to be outside, even though it is still pretty humid over here in Charleston!

Thoughts and Feelings: Well I pretty much wrote it all above, but I am excited and counting down the days for my first ob gyn visit!
